The Alternate Timeline is an alternate ending for the Red Queen novel and an alternate opening chapter for Glass Sword. Both chapters are included in the Barnes & Noble edition of Glass Sword and the LitJoy Special Edition of Glass Sword.

Plot[]

The alternate ending of Red Queen begins with Mare and Cal's attempted execution in the Bowl of Bones. After defeating their executioners, they are rescued by the Scarlet Guard who lead them through the pipes beneath the arena towards an abandoned train station. Before they can board, time halts around Mare. She is approached by Shade and another version of herself. Shade takes her arm and the world disappears.

In alternate beginning to Glass Sword, Mare awakens in a room of bunks she does not recognise, with a brown dog that looks similar to Farley's brown puppy Shiner. She exits to find a mountainous landscape and snow falling. She then comes across Evangeline, only she now has scars and her hair is different. She flees from her, running into Shade. Evangeline - familiarly referred to as Eve by Shade - had given chase but does not attack. Instead, she deomonstrates an intimate knowledge of Mare as if the two are old friends. She leaves the siblings alone while Shade explains to Mare that they are in the mountains of Monsarum in the West, ten years in the future. Shade has the ability to control time. In this timeline, the war is lost, and Shade took future Mare back in time, switching places with past Mare so that she can change history.

Future Mare, now in the underground train with Farley, Kilorn and Cal, recounts their futures in her timeline. Farley heals her scar three years on, but is killed 10 months later, apparently taking awful people with her. She states that this day will change Cal, leading him down an awful path, and in her timeline, Cal eventually lost his mind. Mare was forced to kill him once, and asserts that she will do so again if she has to.

Trivia[]

  • The name for the alternate timeline is unofficial.
  • The alternate Red Queen ending was the original ending. Victoria Aveyard explained that after her agent read through Red Queen, she said, "Everything up to this point was great. You’ve got to take this out." Aveyard heeded this advice and rewrote the ending.
