When Harrus takes over his brother [[Jared Jacos]]' position as governor, the family moves to the capital, [[Archeon]]. Coriane misses their country estate and her garage of tools and machines. She begins sneaking out of the house looking for a place where she might feel like herself. On one of these excursions, she runs into Prince Tiberias Calore VI. They met on the bridge that spanned the Capital River. The first time he asked her to walk with him, Coriane believed it would be the last, too. A few weeks later however, and they are still seeing each other and he asks her to call him Tibe, a family nickname.

She was only able to do so because she kept her pregnancy a secret. Coriane is convinced that Elara has been in her mind, giving her nightmares and causing her body to refuse the pregnancies due to the excessive stress. She slowly goes insane trying to figure out how Elara got into her mind and continues to plague her. At the Parting Ball, Coriane uses her ability as a [[singer]] to enter Elara's mind and ask her if she was vexing her with nightmares. Elara says she didn't, only that she made her trip on her wedding dress. But it's clear that Elara was lying.

Cruel Crown is the collection of two previously released novellas in the Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard. It is a prequel for Red Queen. Both novellas are also published in Broken Throne.
