Detraon is the capital city of the Kingdom of the Lakelands.

Description[]

Detraon is a city of canals, nymph-cut into the bedrock on the western edge of Clear Bay. The ancient city that used to sit there was washed away by floods more than a thousand years ago. There are still massive fields of debris downriver, choked with the rotten ruins.[1]

Detraon is located beside Lake Eris, with easy access to Lake Neron through a short strait and the rest of the lake beyond. From Detraon, over broth natural and nymph-made waterways, citizens can reach almost every corner of the kingdom.

Quarters[]

The city is cut into quarter sectors surrounding the central temples. Most Reds live in the southeast, farthest from the waterfront. The palace quarter and noble quarter sit on the bay itself, overlooking the water. The Whirlpool Quarter is in the northeast, where both wealthier Reds and less important Silvers live in close proximity. This quarter is home to the merchants, businessmen, lower officers and soldiers, and poor students from the university. The Reds that live in the Whirlpool Quarter are skilled workers and servants wealthy or important enough to live in Silver households.

The noble quarter is made of arches with turquoise and gold walls. Here is where the estates of the Great Lines of the Lakelands are located. A low wall divides the avenues from the bay. As the noble quarter changes into the royal palace, the walls change from polished gilding and turquoise paint to gleaming marble.

The Royelle[]

The Royelle is the name of the royal palace. It spirals across the vast grounds of its sector. It has its own canals and aqueducts, their waters spilling out in fountains and falls. Some arch over the path, carried to the bay, while others run under the walkway. In winter, most of these freeze, decorating the path in icy sculptures no human hand could create. Priests from the temples will read the ice on feast days and holidays to communicate the will of the gods.

There are grand gates opening on the bay, flanked by guards and waterfalls. Inside the bay is a courtyard. This courtyard is a wide, manicured riot of blue flowers of every kind.

Near this courtyard is the royal family's personal shrine. The shrine adjoins the royal apartments of the monarch, and is secured and simple. There is a waist-height fountain in the center of the small chamber. Worn faces, bland in their features, both strange and familiar, look down from the ceiling and walls. The windows are made from diamondglass with the panes arranged like spiraling waves.

There is a larger temple in the palace. That one is used for court services. The city of Detraon has its own massive temples in the center of the city.
