Red Queen is a YA fantasy series by Victoria Aveyard. It began in 2015 with Red Queen and ended in 2019 with Broken Throne.

Plot

After a series of catastrophic disasters almost destroyed the Earth, human civilization underwent some massive shifts. The biggest of these changes was the emergence of Silvers, people with silverblood and superpowers that ranged from pyrokinesis to mind reading to super speed. Over the course of a couple centuries, Silvers became kings- gods even- with unlimited control over their powerless Red brethren.

This is the world that Mare Barrow only knows. As a low Red, Mare's only talent is being a skilled pickpocket. That is until the day of Queenstrial when Mare falls into the electrical shield covering the arena. Not only does she survive, her contact with the shield releases her power to control lightning and electricity; an ability that had been bottled up inside her since birth.

In order to cover up the impossibility of a Red possessing a Silver ability, Mare is forced into the role of a lost Silver princess with all that that entails; giving up the chance to reunite with her family and ever toeing the line between life and death. Despite the constant danger of exposure, she does find a few allies within the Silver palace, even forming a tentative friendship with Julian, her tutor, and Cal, the King's first son and heir.

However, Mare cannot forget everything that the Silver Elite have done and continue to do to her kind. Now in a position to get inside information, Mare joins the Scarlet Guard, a rebel group who seeks to topple their Silver overlords and usher in a new era of equality. With her joins Maven Calore, the King's second son, and Kilorn Warren, her childhood friend.

This new reality does not last for long, though. A shocking betrayal leaves Mare's heart in shambles, making her realize that the path to a Red dawn will be a long and brutal one.
